Example text

Ofcourse there are values and hierarchies within the community but these are fluid, as the description of the community's behaviour at Nel Wright's wedding suggests, where 'the church women who frowned on any bodily expression of joy (except when the hand of god commanded it) tapped their feet' and 'even Helene Wright had mellowed with the cane' (79). The background details of Medallion the razor fights, the doctoring of the punch at Nel's wedding, the women fighting over Ajax - reinforce the volatility of the community, epitomised in the main events of the narrative, which is itself partly a product of rapid urbanisation in which clear conventions of behaviour have not been developed.

In Geraldine's life the family kitten of the Dick-Jane mythology also becomes the object of displaced emotions. The cat, which she cradles in 'the deeply private areas of her lap', is the only thing to which she can show any kind of warmth. Geraldine's marriage is described as building a nest; it seems to consist only of ironed shirts and the phrase 'birthed Louis junior' suggests that parenthood, too, for her is a cold affair. Even the black cat which with blue eyes seems to signify the ideology to which Geraldine aspires, is as cold as an iceberg.

Secondly, Shadrack focuses the concern of black people to try to place what has happened, and is happening to them, into their scheme of things. Shadrack's disorientation is resonant of that of AfricanAmericans in twentieth-century America: 'Twenty-two years old, weak, hot, frightened, not daring to acknowledge the fact that he didn't even know who or what he was ... with no past, no language, no 42 Toni Morrison tribe, no source, '(12). The way in which Shadrak's tin plate is divided - 'reassured that the white, the red and the brown would stay where they were - would not explode or burst farth from their restricted zones' (8) - epitomises the precarious nature of the white geopolitical structures and the Western philosophical system of ordering, dividing and classifying.
